and Now You Can Too…

“Third-party certification programs can help answer important questions for downstream customers. Are THC levels below legal limits? Does the material come from legal hemp? Is the production process consistent? Do CBD levels meet label claims? Are any harmful environmental contaminants present? Could my CBD product cause a positive drug test? Are dangerous synthetic cannabinoids substituted for CBD? Brands often try to answer these questions themselves, but when a qualified third-party provider verifies the claims a higher level of trust is established.
“Third-party certification programs deliver on a growing consumer demand for transparency, which can be especially important in the CBD and hemp product arena. Initiatives like third-party certification that provide a window into quality control may also have a surprising return on investment. A recent survey noted that 73% of consumers would be willing to pay more for a product they believed to be more transparent and suggested there could be as much as a 20% return on investment for brands that dedicate themselves to transparency.”
Here is a brief excerpt from a new piece BSCG President Oliver Catlin wrote about third-party certification of CBD products that appears August 5 in Natural Products Insider. Read the entire piece here online.
In December, Oliver appeared in a Natural Products Insider podcast with Senior Editor Steve Myers to discuss “the confusing world of CBD and sports banned substance testing.” Find the 12-minute podcast, recorded at October’s SupplySide West show in Las Vegas, here on the NPI website.
In July, the FDA published results of tests for 147 CBD supplement products and found that of 102 products declaring CBD content, 18 contained less than 80% of the amount of CBD claimed, 46 contained CBD within 20% of the amount indicated, and 38 products contained more than 120% of the amount of CBD stated. In this New Hope article, journalist Todd Runestad writes, “It’s buyer beware when it comes to the wild west of hemp CBD products.” And he concludes: “Savvy consumers need to rely on a sophisticated third party to help them navigate the hemp CBD market.”

BSCG is proud to offer the BSCG Certified CBD program, the first broad-spectrum third-party program in the world for the CBD and hemp product industry. BSCG Certified CBD is a unique all-in-one program that offers a complete compliance solution to manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. For this comprehensive program, BSCG conducts ongoing testing for banned substances, verifies the level of cannabinoids including CBD and THC while applying a limit on THC for drug-testing protection, and confirms products do not contain a range of contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, solvents and microbiological agents. The initial certification process includes reviews of product labels and claims, verifies CBD and hemp sourcing, and evaluates the quality control process for Good Manufacturing Practices compliance.
