BSCG Expands Dietary Supplement Banned Substance And Prescription Drug Certification And Adds Two New Certification Programs
February 2, 2017FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Los Angeles, Feb. 2, 2017) – BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group), a pioneer in dietary supplement banned substance and prescription drug certification, has expanded the protection offered in its industry-leading BSCG Certified Drug Free® program and added two new certification programs, BSCG Certified Quality™ and BSCG Certified GMP™. Each of BSCG’s certification programs is available to any level of the natural product or supplement industries including finished product brands, ingredient suppliers, and manufacturing facilities.
The BSCG Certified Drug Free® testing menu continues to lead the supplement certification industry with coverage for 475+ banned substances in sport, prescription, over-the-counter (OTC) or illicit drugs. BSCG’s testing menu offers the broadest coverage available in the industry and is the only program to provide protection against drugs not banned in sport, making it the clear choice for third-party certification and testing.
“We are pleased to take the supplement certification industry to the next level of consumer and athlete protection,” said Oliver Catlin, BSCG President. “Our core BSCG Certified Drug Free® program continues to offer the broadest protection available against banned substances in sport and remains the only program to offer protection against prescription, OTC, and illicit drugs not banned in sport. Our two new program options expand the focus of our gold standard certification services, all of which are offered to any level of the industry including brands, ingredient providers, and manufacturing facilities.”
In December 2014, BSCG became the first supplement certification provider to add protection against prescription, OTC, and illicit drugs not banned in sport. BSCG’s action came after an analysis of the FDA’s Tainted Supplements List revealed 76% of the hidden drugs the FDA finds in supplements are not banned in sport. BSCG remains the only certification provider testing for prescription, OTC, or illicit drugs not banned in sport, which include muscle relaxers, opioid painkillers, weight-loss agents, PDE-5 inhibitors like Viagra, and other potential drug contaminants.
The BSCG Certified Drug Free® program also offers optional add-on testing for animal supplements focusing on equine and canine prohibited substances including drugs banned by the Federation Equine International (FEI) and the Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association (TOBA). BSCG is the only third-party group to tailor its banned substance certification to the protection of animal supplements.
The new BSCG Certified Quality™ program provides third-party confirmation of the quality, integrity, purity, and strength of ingredients or finished products independently, or a sampling of those used or produced in manufacturing facilities. BSCG conducts laboratory analysis to verify raw material or finished product quality control specifications and substantiate label claims. The program also includes testing for the presence of environmental contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, and microbiological agents.
The new BSCG Certified GMP™ program focuses on evaluating compliance with 21 C.F.R. 111 Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) by conducting onsite audits of manufacturing facilities, or in the case of finished products, evaluating the process involved in verifying product quality and integrity. GMP helps ensure that natural products and dietary supplements are produced consistently and according to established quality control guidelines.
