– BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group), a leading provider of dietary supplement certification and testing for banned substance protection, quality verification and GMP compliance, is clarifying that Biomedical Research Laboratories is no longer a participant in the BSCG Certified Drug Free® program. No Biomedical Research Laboratories products have been tested or certified to be free of banned substances by BSCG since June 2015.
Previously BSCG was pleased to provide its Certified Drug Free® program to Biomedical Research Laboratories to help protect its human and equine supplements from potential contamination with prohibited substances. The following products were previously certified: Tri-Fuel, EPO-Boost, EPO-Equine, EQ-Royal, Un-Lock. Under the program each batch of a product was tested and certified to be free of doping agents and other pharmaceutical drugs. Ongoing batch testing is a requirement and enables products to carry the .
Biomedical Research Laboratories has not sent any products for testing under the BSCG Certified Drug Free® program since June 2015. The supplement company opted to create its own gold drug free seals closely resembling BSCG Certified Drug Free® seals and has been using them on packaging and in marketing in the place of BSCG Certified Drug Free® seals. The replacement seals mimic the design of the BSCG seal with a similar jagged edge gold outline, similar placement of interior lines, and adoption of similar language. The seals state, “100% Drug Free: For Professional Athletes” or “For Equine Athletes.”
At BSCG’s request, Biomedical Research Laboratories has indicated that in the future it will replace its current 100% Drug Free seal in use with a new 100% Drug Free seal that no longer looks similar to the BSCG Certified Drug Free® seal.
BRL’s current 100% Drug Free seals appear in relation to the following products: Tri-Fuel, EPO-Boost, EPO-Equine, EQ-Royal, Un-Lock, Altitude Boost, and VO2 Boost (Altitude Boost and VO2 Boost were never tested or certified by BSCG). Various claims of certification and testing remain on product pages at Biomedical Research Laboratories website, www.brlscience.com, and on independent sites for several products as of December 19, 2016. (For a full list of such statements, please contact BSCG.)
Third-party testing and certification of supplement products for banned substances in sport is serious business. One contaminated supplement can lead to a positive drug test and significantly impact an athlete’s career or health. Third-party certification providers like BSCG allow the use of trademarks or seals by participants in order to indicate the protection provided. Ensuring appropriate use of those trademarks and seals is vital to the consumers, athletes and other professionals that rely on the protection certified products offer. Athletes and consumers should always explore and verify any claims that an individual supplement, or brand, is free of drugs or banned substances.
Given the use of a seal that mimics the BSCG seal and has the potential to mislead or confuse consumers, coupled with continued discussion of testing and certification in association with Biomedical Research Laboratories products, BSCG is taking the step to put out this advisory. Athletes, consumers, horse trainers and owners, and other interested parties should be aware that BSCG has not certified any Biomedical Research Laboratories products since June 2015.
