China Cracks down on Doping Agents Criminalizing Use, Manufacturing, and Distribution of Performance Enhancing
Drugs

Third-party certification and testing will be perhaps nowhere more important than in China. In extending its fight against doping, China in November announced a new crackdown on performance enhancing drugs that includes criminal punishments against athletes and coaches who use them. The policy extends to producers and distributors
of banned substances and products that contain them, which is of vital consideration to the nutrition industry. The new law went into effect on January 1.

BSCG strongly advises that any dietary supplement, sports nutrition, or related company engaged in raw material or finished product operations in China have their products tested by a trusted third-party certification provider to ensure protection in this new environment. BSCG stands ready to safeguard supplement companies and their
personnel from potential impacts of the new policy in China.

NDMA Contamination in Drugs Should be Examined in Dietary Supplements

In early April, the FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) announced it had requested manufacturers immediately
withdraw all prescription and over-thecounter drugs from the marketplace. Zantac and generic products containing ranitidine were recalled. In higher-than-room temperatures, these products may expose consumers to the carcinogen NDMA.
As it happened, in January, BSCG began developing a testing standard for NDMA and has been working to build a method that can soon be added to our testing of products enrolled in the BSCG Certified Drug Free program. BSCG remains the only third-party certification provider to include testing for prescription, over-the-counter,
and illicit drugs not banned in sport.Read more about the FDA’s recent move to protect consumers from NDMA

BSCG Athlete Assurance Program to Support the New VADA Supplement Safety Initiative

Third-party dietary supplement certification and testing is essential for athletes who want to ensure their products are not tainted with drugs banned in sport. Testing is not just available to brands. Athletes, teams, and
leagues can get supplement products screened for WADA Prohibited Substances and more in the BSCG Athlete Assurance
Program. The Athlete Assurance Program provides the same world-class protection that our Certified Drug Free program offers to brands in the nutrition industry. BSCG isexcited to offer the program to boxers inthe Voluntary Anti-Doping Association(VADA) as part of the new VADASupplement Safety Initiative.”

BSCG Certified Drug Free Has You Covered

Years ago, a careful review by BSCG of the official FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) database of tainted supplement products revealed that 26% of the problematic drugs were banned in sport, while a staggering 74% of the problematic drugs were not. That’s why BSCG decided to expand its testing of supplements to include prescription, overthe-counter, and illicit drugs.
Today BSCG remains the only leading certification provider to test in these categories. With consumers looking for safe supplement products, this distinction matters now more than than ever. Learn more about the rigorous BSCG Certified Drug Free program.

BSCG Teams Up with Support Clean Sport to Help Athletes in Need

May 5, 2020

Please Consider Donating Today to Aid for Athletes from Support Clean Sport

Sport has been a huge part of our lives and is engrained in the cultures of the United States and countries around the world. As we all deal with unprecedented impacts of the coronavirus on our lives so too do the athletes that drive our passions. We have all seen sport come to a complete halt for the first time in modern history. While the high-profile and well-paid athletes many of us worship can weather this storm better than most of us, thousands of amateur and Olympic athletes who dedicate their lives to the love of sport are dependent on competitive income for their livelihoods. These athletes represent the foundation of amateur sport and many of them are struggling along with so many other people today.

Many of these athletes work regular jobs even if they are lucky enough to be supported with stipends from the USOC or the 50 National Governing Bodies (NGBs) that together oversee amateur sport in America. Many of these athletes are impacted both by a loss of a job and competitive income. With competitions halted and income down, many NGBs are also having to furlough staff, further impacting the support structure for amateur athletes.

Support Clean Sport (SCS) and Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG) are leading the charge on a fundraising effort to provide direct #AidforAthletes. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to provide $1,000 each to 100 impacted athletes throughout the amateur and Olympic sport movement. Funds will be available to athletes licensed for competition in one of the NGBs. We will work NGBs and other sporting groups and event organizers like USA CRITS to identify athletes that qualify for assistance within their communities and distribute the funds directly to them.

SCS, a grassroots initiative of the 501c3 non-profit public charity Anti-Doping Research, works to inspire a culture of clean sport with the SCS community of athletes and professionals leading by example. BSCG has been an international leader in third-party certification and testing of nutritional supplements for more than 15 years and is a cornerstone supporter of the SCS initiative.

Both SCS and BSCG were built by sport drug-testing guru Dr. Don Catlin and his son Oliver Catlin on a foundation of decades of experience at the forefront of Olympic and U.S. anti-doping efforts. For 5 years now SCS and BSCG have worked together to sponsor the Support Clean Sport/BSCG/Guttenplan Coaching Domestic Elite Cycling team competing in the USA CRITS series and other domestic elite races. This team embodies our message of clean sport and showcases the concept on the streets and on the podium.

Join us today to help athletes who are struggling right now. Please generously donate what you can to #AidforAthletes by visiting our page on GoFundMe Charity. Together, we can help athletes in need.

BSCG – A GLOBAL PRESENCE. PROUD TO CERTIFY MORE THAN 60 BRANDS AND 400 PRODUCTS ACROSS 60 COUNTRIES AND COUNTING

To our clients, colleagues and friends,

We reach out to you today in unprecedented times as we all struggle with the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed our lives have been affected in ways we could have never imagined months ago. It is hard not to worry about something or someone on a daily basis. Yet the difficult realities we face also come with some positives. The collective pause we are subjected to has allowed us to take a step back and focus on what is really important and valuable in the world. Hopefully, a bit of a silver lining for us all.

At BSCG we are grateful for your trust and for the opportunity to provide third-party certification and testing to the nutrition industry that makes so many exciting products to support the health and well-being of athletes and consumers. We are proud to be a global leader thanks to all of our valued clients, the downstream consumers who rely on our work for protection and assurance, and all the groups that acknowledge our efforts.

BSCG is committed to serving your certification and testing needs even in this difficult environment. Fortunately, our lab partners continue to operate as essential services while taking significant steps to mitigate any risks of COVID-19 to employees and operations. We ask that you bear with us in the event of any unforeseen impacts on our services.

UFC Recognizes BSCG

The UFC has officially included BSCG on its list of approved supplement third-party certification providers for its athletes in the UFC Prohibited List

For many years, BSCG has advocated for sporting groups to acknowledge the importance of third-party certification and testing programs like BSCG’s. Such programs can help athletes navigate the supplement marketplace and protect them as well as supplement manufacturers, distributors, and ingredient suppliers from the risks of products being contaminated with banned substances. We appreciate the efforts of Jeff Novitzky and his team at the UFC for doing their due diligence and recognizing BSCG as one of the world’s most trusted banned substance certification providers.

Third-Party Certification and Testing Protects Reputable Companies

In late January, a massive recall of dietary supplements was announced in the United States. More than 800 brands of supplements from contract manufacturer ABH Nature’s Products, ABH Pharma, and Stocknutra.com were recalled due to GMP compliance violations.

A lackluster approach to GMP compliance can lead to the demise of an entire brand. Brand owners and managers are responsible for ensuring compliance as much as manufacturers. BSCG advises supplement companies to take GMP compliance seriously and consider using a third-party provider like BSCG to audit manufacturing or holding facilities as well as internal brand owner compliance. The BSCG Certified GMP program is available to those that wish to represent compliance to clients or consumers.

In addition to BSCG Certified GMP, BSCG offers a full suite of certification programs. All programs include initial ingredient, label, and GMP compliance assessment. BSCG Certified Drug Free offers industry leading screening for banned substances in sport and other OTC, illicit, or prescription drugs. BSCG Certified Quality conducts testing for label contents and environmental contaminants. BSCG Certified CBD is an all-in-one certification program customized for the CBD product industry which includes testing for label contents, environmental contaminants, and banned substances with a daily ingestion limit on THC to protect against positive drug tests. Please contact us for more information at info@bscg.org .

VADA PARTNERS WITH BSCG TO ENHANCE FIGHTER SAFETY WITH SUPPLEMENT SAFETY INITIATIVE

April 14, 2020 – The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) recognizes this is a difficult time for us all given the worldwide uncertainty surrounding Covid-19. However, we believe in supporting clean sport to the best of our ability and in keeping boxing and MMA free of performance-enhancing drugs. During this time of bout postponement and cancellations we need to do as much as we can to protect fighter safety and enhance education.

In that aim, VADA is joining forces with BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group), an international leader in supplement certification and testing, to offer nutritional supplement analysis for performance-enhancing substances directly to VADA-enrolled fighters. Third-party supplement certification and testing is essential for athletes who want to ensure products are not tainted with drugs banned in sport. This service is usually available only to nutrition companies and brands. The BSCG Athlete Assurance Program offers the same protection directly to athletes.

“BSCG welcomes the chance to help VADA fighters protect themselves against the possibility that performance-enhancing drugs could be hiding in their supplements,” says BSCG President Oliver Catlin. “BSCG will conduct customized testing of nutritional supplements through our Athlete Assurance Program, which provides the same world-class protection that our Certified Drug Free program offers to the nutrition industry.”

BSCG Certified Drug Free is the gold standard when it comes third-party certification and testing for banned substances. The testing menu covers more than 497 drugs including drugs on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List as well as illicit, prescription and over-the-counter drugs not banned in sport that no other program covers. BSCG’s Athlete Assurance Program applies this same industry-leading protection on an individual level.

VADA is a 501c3 non-profit offering drug testing services to the fight sport community. Supplement testing will be paid for by VADA and will be available to VADA-enrolled fighters on a limited basis. Athletes need to apply directly by e-mail to info@VADA-testing.org and we will respond with administrative paperwork and instructions on how to ship samples to BSCG for testing.

BSCG was established in 2004 by renowned sports anti-doping pioneer Dr. Don Catlin and his son Oliver Catlin. Among other acknowledgements, BSCG is listed as an official certification provider by Sports Nutrition and Dietitians Japan (SNDJ), a primary resource for Japanese athletes in the run-up to the Tokyo Olympics.

While VADA-enrolled athletes continue to be eligible for testing, we are following the advice of local and international healthcare professionals in all of our considerations. We will take every precaution possible to ensure VADA testing will focus first on protecting our athletes and doping control officers from Covid-19. Please stay safe and well and remember to be smart with the supplements you elect to use.

BSCG UPDATE: COVID-19 PREPARATION AND CONTINGENCY PLAN

March 19, 2020

A Message to Our Clients

BSCG Gold Seal

Good day to all of our valued clients around the world. All of us at BSCG wish you and your people well in these difficult times as we all struggle with the worldwide effects of COVID-19. Your trust in our services have helped make BSCG a global leader in third-party certification and testing over the last 15 years. BSCG remains committed to supporting our clients during the global pandemic, and rest assured we are doing everything possible to maintain seamless operations.

We are grateful that BSCG continues to operate as usual with no impacts to our services at this time. We are working to prepare for any eventualities that may arise and to make additional contingency plans in the event our lab partners experience a disruption in service. While no plan can provide complete assurance against the unknown risks the current scenario presents, we are doing everything we can to enhance our already robust processes and controls and to minimize the risks and effects of COVID-19.

The following steps have been taken in association with our lab partners to address the COVID-19 situation and potential impacts:

– Travel for all employees has been put on hold unless legally required or necessary to maintain business operations.

– Off-site quarantine is required for anyone who has travelled to high-risk regions, becomes ill, or tests positive for COVID-19.

– Facility sanitization in common areas has been increased to ensure cleanliness and minimize any potential for spread of infection.

– Laboratory access has been restricted to employees and essential vendors only until further notice.

– We have communicated with essential laboratory inventory vendors to ensure future supply and have increased our inventory of key laboratory resources.

– Worked to expand the number of vendors to broaden supply chain of vital resources.

– We already have established contingency plans with our network of lab partners to ensure continuity of service in the event of an emergency. Given the extreme nature of the current concern surrounding COVID-19, we have worked to expand our network further to prepare for the eventuality that our primary and secondary partners might be affected.

– Ongoing monitoring of CDC’s website regarding COVID-19 developments and recommendations.

Please feel free to contact me directly with any specific concerns or questions you might have. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and adjust our plans as needed to minimize the risk to our people and any possible impacts to our community of clients. Despite the current challenges, we are working on some exciting consumer marketing initiatives, a website update, expanded communications and more to enhance awareness in the importance of third-party certification. We look forward to sharing those positive efforts with you soon.

Best regards to all of you and stay well.
