In late December, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act was signed into law at the federal level. The measure, which will take effect in July 2022, aims to help protect horses and make horseracing drug free. A board reporting to the Federal Trade Commission will establish the rules and the United States Anti-Doping Agency has been tasked with enforcing the new regulations.
BSCG has long been an active advocate of greater oversight and better practices towards the aim of building a foundation of clean sport for the racing industry and creating an environment in which horseracing can once again thrive. Among other things, Dr. Don H. Catlin, BSCG’s chief science officer, spoke in Albany, New York, over a decade ago about the need to curb the use of anabolic steroids in thoroughbred racing. A couple years later, with support from the Jockey Club Equine Drug Research Institute and using techniques developed for humans, his team developed a new drug test for the powerful blood-boosting drug CERA in equines.
In 2009, both Dr. Catlin and Oliver Catlin worked with the industry’s Racing, Medication & Testing Consortium (RMTC) Drug Testing Initiatives Committee to help create the structure and concept of drug testing laboratory accreditation for the thoroughbred racing industry. This effort helped to establish quality standards for testing laboratories and improve the equine drug-testing infrastructure in the U.S.
Today, BSCG proudly offers its BSCG Certified Drug Free program for equines, canines and other competitive animals. BSCG is the only third-party certification provider to offer a testing menu focused on substances prohibited by animal anti-doping regulations. The BSCG Certified Drug Free for Animal Supplements program includes testing finished product lots of supplements or other health and wellness products for more than 1,300 drugs currently prohibited in animal sport.
BSCG has been named the Nutraceutical & Supplement Testing & Certification Organization of the Year by Global Health & Pharma.

BSCG President Oliver Catlin said, “We are honored by this industry award and will strive to continue to earn it and build on our work over the past year.”
